The Arlington High School Jazz Machine is the top Jazz Ensemble at Arlington High School. Membership in this extra-curricular ensemble is determined by audition and the group rehearses 1 to 2 nights per week for 3
hours each rehearsal. This ensemble is for the most advanced jazz performers and its’ focus is to perform "concert oriented" jazz literature that is often recorded by college or professional big bands, with a greater
emphasis on improvisational and listening skills.
The Jazz Machine performs in various festivals and concerts within the school district as well as around the county, state, and the northeast region. The Jazz Machine has attended the prestigious Berklee Jazz Festival in Boston 20 times. Since 2007, the Jazz Machine took 1st place 4 times at Berklee and placed in the top 3 virtually every year in Large Ensemble Class 1 between 2007 and 2017. The Jazz Machine also participates annually in the Essentially Ellington program. In 2018, the Jazz Machine was named a finalist and placed 2nd at the 2018 Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival and returned to the MAJF in 2019 to once again be named a finalist and took 1st place as well!
