Frequently Asked Questions

  •

How often does my child have art?

Students attend art once per 6-day cycle for 40 minutes.

What should my child wear on art days?

The art materials we use can be messy. Please make sure your child is dress appropriately. An oversized t-shirt usually works best as a smock.

When will my child bring their artwork home?

I generally keep student work in their art portfolios for the year and then the portfolios are sent home in June. This allows students the opportunity to view their work and see how much they have accomplished and learned throughout the year!

When is the District Arts Fair?

The District Arts Fair is on Saturday, April 6, 2019. It will be held at LaGrange Middle School from 11:00am – 4:00pm.

Will my child’s artwork be on display at the District Arts Fair?

Due to the fact that I teach over 300 students at West, I cannot put artwork from every student in District Arts Fair (I wish I could though!). I will send a letter home if your child’s artwork has been selected. Whether or not your child’s artwork is on display, I encourage you and your family to visit the fair. It is a wonderful celebration of art!

How is my child graded for art?

Students receive an overall grade, which is an average of the individual grades of three indicators:

      • Art skills and techniques
      • Demonstrates an understanding of art concepts
      • Engages in positive learning behavior

Students will receive a score of 1, 2, 3, or 4 on each indicator.

      • 1 = Needs Support
      • 2 = Progressing
      • 3 = Proficient
      • 4 = Excelling

What are good questions to ask my child about their artwork when they bring it home?

A lot of thinking and planning went into your child's artmaking process. The field of art education has made great progress from what you may recall from your school days. We focus on the artistic process, rather than on creating a product in a 40 minute period. Focusing on creative thinking skills enhances learning in all areas of life! Here are some questions to prompt discussion between you and your child:

    • Can you tell me about it?
    • Where did you begin?
    • How did you get your idea?
    • What part are you proudest of?
    • What was the most challenging part?
    • What materials did you use to make it?
    • Where should we display this?
    • Did you learn a new technique?
