    Dear Arlington Community,

On behalf of the Arlington Central School District Board of Education we would like to bring to your attention the importance of supporting Assembly Bill A04743.  This bill will allow school districts to opt out of serving as a polling place for elections.  This is important to our district because schools are less than ideal locations to serve as polling locations.  On voting days (November Election Day, also during local and primary voting dates), we are not permitted to use our typical security protocols to scan visitors who come to the school to vote.  Measures typically used to keep students safe include keeping external doors locked and screening visitors by checking their identification.  Voting law does not allow us to check IDs for voters.

You can help create a safer environment for students by sending the attached letter or your own to the following elected officials in the New York State Assembly. Taking the time to make our representatives aware that you support the bill will encourage them to co-sponsor the bill.

Below is a template to assist you in writing in support of this important bill. You can change this to include your personal information and the name of the addressee. Thank you for your help and support in this matter.

    Hon. Carl Heastie
    Speaker
    New York State Assembly
    LOB Room 932

    Dear Speaker Heastie,

As a parent of a student in the Arlington Central School District, I/we ask that you support Assembly Bill A04743 at the Assembly/Senate level.

This bill is important to our district and to myself as a parent of children in this school district because schools are less than ideal locations to serve as polling locations.  This is because the District is not permitted to use their typical security protocols to scan visitors who come to the school to vote.  Measures used to keep students safe include keeping external doors locked and screening visitors by checking their identification. As you know, voting law prevents the use of these measures on election days.  If this bill should pass, it would afford our children continued safety.  Why should our children be put at a high risk of unsafe measures due to doors being unlocked and unsecured with no protocol in place to check identification of individuals entering the building while our children are in attendance?  Our District has worked hard to put these important security measures in place to keep our children safe and unharmed while in attendance during the school day and should have the ability to decline or change a school building’s designation as a polling place.

We urge you to support Assembly Bill A04743 in order to keep all of our children safe and secure in their school buildings during voting processes.

    Sincerely,

    Your Name
