The spirit of giving is alive and well at West Road!
This month, the fourth graders in Ms. Jacques and Ms. Cory’s class poured their hearts into crafting beautiful, handmade holiday cards for our local senior citizens.
The highlight of the project came on Dec. 12, when a special guest, "Santa Joe" (Arlington bus driver Joe Torres), made a stop at the school! He personally collected the cards to deliver them to the Office for the Aging in Poughkeepsie, ensuring they reach seniors just in time for the holidays. “I think I had more fun than the kids!” shared Torres. “I know when I deliver these cards, the seniors will be absolutely as elated as I certainly was as I read each one!”
This heartwarming project was more than just a classroom activity; it was a beautiful bridge between generations and a wonderful way to spread holiday joy throughout our community.

Vail Farm held its sixth annual Day of Giving on Nov. 21. This heartwarming tradition was spearheaded by the amazing Student Council! Each Vail student donated a Thanksgiving item (stuffing, instant potatoes, applesauce, canned vegetables, gravy, cranberry sauce, instant rice, mac & cheese, cornbread mix) and students paraded into the cafeteria, setting all of the donated items on a table.
These items helped feed 32 Arlington families from across the district, not just Vail Farm! All extra donations were passed on to Dutchess Outreach, extending the festive goodwill even further into our community!

In conjunction with the Poughkeepsie Library's Great Read, author Laurie Halse Anderson visited Arlington High School on Thursday, November 6. She presented two dynamic lectures on her book, Rebellion 1776, which tells the story of a 13-year-old girl navigating Boston during the 1776 siege.
Anderson also presented a third talk about her influential novel, Speak, which delves into the challenging experience of a high school freshman who becomes an outcast after breaking up a party.
Each year, the Poughkeepsie Library chooses a book for the Big Read, which encourages the community to read, discuss, and participate in thematic events. This year’s theme was Eve of Revolution, which explored various aspects of the American Revolution.

At AHS, Mrs. Marden's Regents Biology students got an unforgettable lesson in conservation, right in their own backyard.
Students had the opportunity to go outside to meet a newly hatched endangered Blanding's Turtle with retired AHS teacher Maribel Mueller. They were thrilled to learn firsthand all about this rare species and the vital conservation work Mrs. Mueller leads right there on school property. What a fantastic way to connect with science and make a real difference!

Arlington HS biology teacher, Tricia Muraco, spent six weeks this summer at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies participating in scientific research and developing innovative instructional materials for her classroom. Donning mesh-covered hats to protect them from insects, a research team investigated the legacy effects of spongy moth caterpillar defoliation on forest structure and productivity.
Based on her experience, Ms. Muraco is designing a lab that will get her students out into the forest at Baird Park. The students will work in teams to measure productivity, biomass, and carbon sequestration, as well as how disturbances shape those variables.
Over the coming school year, she will continue to work with the Biology Research Experience for Teachers (BIORETS) program managers to refine, implement, and evaluate her new lesson plans.
