Degrees and Certifications:
Michael Tiskowitz has been a band director in the Arlington Central School District since 2001. Mr. Tiskowitz has taught 6th & 8th grade band, jazz band and was previously the assistant director of the Admiral Marching Band. During the summer months, Mr. Tiskowitz serves as program director and conductor for the Arlington Summer Band Program, which serves over 300 students in the Poughkeepsie area each year. Prior to teaching in Arlington, Mr. Tiskowitz directed the 6th grade band program for the Beacon City School District.
In addition to his public school teaching, for many years Mr. Tiskowitz had a large and successful private studio. His former private students have gone on to attend top music programs throughout the northeast; including Boston College, Yale and the Eastman School of Music. From 2005-2014, Mr. Tiskowitz had the honor of conducting the Symphonic Band at Western Connecticut State University’s Summer Music @ West Conn. Mr. Tiskowitz has also served on the faculty and staff at the New England Music Camp, Crane Youth Music and the Usdan Center for the Creative & Performing Arts. He has also had the opportunity to serve as the Guest Conductor for the 2016 Ulster County Elementary All County Band, the 2015 Columbia County Junior High School All-County Band and has been invited twice to guest conduct the Putnam County Middle School All-County Band (2013 & 2006.)
Mr. Tiskowitz served two terms as a member of the Executive Board and Hudson Valley Zone Representative for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA.) In 2007, Mr. Tiskowitz was fortunate to be a presenter at the International Conference for the Association for Positive Behavior Support (APBS,) in Boston, Massachusetts.
He earned his Bachelor of Music degree at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam with a double concentration in voice and tuba. He earned his Master of Science degree in Music Education from Western Connecticut State University. While at West Conn., he had the opportunity to complete a graduate assistantship in conducting. Mr. Tiskowitz studied conducting with Dr. Timothy Topolewski and Dr. L. Fernando Jimenez and composition/arranging with Will Rapp and Dr. Robert Washburn. He has also participated in master classes with Dr. Paula Holcomb, and the Gregg Smith Singers.
Mr. Tiskowitz lives in Poughkeepsie with his wife Alexis and their children Abigail, a violinist and flautist, and Benjamin, a budding cellist, who also likes to bang on anything and everything, so probably eventually a drummer.
