    How we became the "Admirals"

    In the early days of Arlington, athletics teams were referred to as the "Maroons".

    Over time, the athletic programs were referred to as the "Uptowners".

    I am still looking for information on why this occurred.

    On December 6, 1961, the nickname and mascot "Admirals" was adopted.

    This seems to have occurred with the work of the spirit committee as the

    A new high school opened.

    Yearbook prologue from the time:

    When a new shipped is launched, the occasion is marked by festivities and ceremony.

    The ship herself is ready to float, but lacks both provisions and crew;

    Sometimes, in the haste to get her to sea, she even lacks some equipment.

    As she feels the water for the first time, she receives the good wishes of her builders and spectators,

    As she is launched off in a traditional manner.

    We find this new Arlington high school about to be launched as her doors open to her first students.

    There were no cheering crowds, and no traditional launching ceremonies.

    We would, however, like to hope that her stout hull will never break on rocks or shoals.

     That she will weather successfully the stormy seas that surely must come with time;

    That her path remains clear of fire and collision; and that she will always have fine officers and a willing crew.
